A Layperson's Guide to Positive Thought Processes

A 1-day stimulating and entertaining workshop, designed to give members of the general community and your clients the power of positive thinking.

Shakespeare said "for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." Maladaptive forms of thinking and/or behaviour underlie many of the problems ordinary people have in dealing with the world and its everyday issues. This workshop will provide valuable insights into how thought processes interfere with mental and emotional wellbeing and how positive thinking can enhance interpersonal coping and wellbeing, using the ABC [Activating Event; Behaviour; Cognition] of Rational Emotive Therapy.

The morning session of the workshop addresses cognitive therapy, beginning with a description of the ABC model. It then progresses to describe in detail thought processes and treatment interventions, including disputation, behavioural experiments and cognitive restructuring. The afternoon session focuses on behavioural interventions, including systematic desensitisation, replacement behaviour and behaviour modification approaches and techniques. Each technique provides participants with the opportunity for application to a personal issue. Importantly, the workshop will provide a flow chart which disentangles cognitive from behavioural techniques and teaches participants when to use each.

This workshop is aimed at members of the public with little or no previous knowledge of positive thought processes, or those who might gain personal benefit from developing their knowledge and skills in this area.
